iGEM 2021

What is iGEM?

iGEM is a worldwide competition taking place every year. It is dedicated to the advancement of synthetic biology and education, and the development of an open community. In 2021, iGEM gathered more than 7000 iGEMers and 400 teams, giving students the opportunity to push the boundaries of synthetic biology by tackling everyday issues facing the world.

Team ULaval's Contribution

In 2021, Laval University took part in the competition. Our team tackled a very important issue for maple syrup producers: ropy syrup. In short, when maple syrup comes in contact with bacteria, it creates ropy syrup, a type of maple syrup which cannot be sold. The team developped a treatment to put into the barrels of ropy syrup to make it usable again for producers, which resulted in a gold medal (overrall) and a silver medal in the category: Overgrad Food & Nutrition project.

My job was to create the website under 3 weeks. Make sure to check it out here.

The website may be very slow (blame iGEM servers). Also, It was the first website I built as an introduction to web development. It's not perfect and there are many things I would change.
